Who would have thought that toothpaste
would be such a contentious issue? It seems like once you make the
effort to adhere to a dental hygiene regimen you should be rewarded
with not having to think about it anymore. Unfortunately, many
popular toothpaste brands have come under medical scrutiny for the
potentially harmful ingredients they contain.
Indeed, most commercially popular brand
toothpastes contain no less than five substances that are currently
being studied for their possible long-term health effects. According to LiveStrong, these
ingredients include:
Sodium Fluoride—Ostensibly
protects against tooth decay, but has well-known toxic properties.
Triclosan—Classified as a
pesticide by the EPA, this chlorophenol may cause cancer.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate—This is
a detergent used to ‘clean’ the teeth,’ but unfortunately it may also
accumulate nitrates in the liver and heart and basically act as a
carcinogen.
Propylene Glycol—Used in
antifreeze, toothpaste manufacturers include it for its ‘wetting’
capabilities, either oblivious to or disregarding the fact that the
